Day 1: Arrival in Kasese
Upon arrival in Kasese, you will check in at your accommodation in Kasese town, such as the Ruwenzori Backpackers or Sandton Hotel Kasese. You will meet your hiking guide and discuss the details of the trek. This is a good time to ask any questions you may have about the hike. You will then have time to rest and prepare for the hike.
Day 2: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
You will begin the hike from Nyakalengija trailhead to Nyabitaba Hut (2,652m). The first part of the hike will take you through the Bakonjo homesteads and the bamboo forest. You will likely see some wildlife along the way, such as monkeys and birds. The hike is challenging but rewarding, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. You will stay overnight at Nyabitaba Hut.
Day 3: Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut
On day 3, you will hike from Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut (3,414m). The trail will take you through the heather and moorland zone. You will cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge, which offers stunning views of the Mubuku River. The hike is steep and challenging, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the mountains. You will stay overnight at John Matte Hut.
Day 4: John Matte to Bujuku Hut
On day 4, you will hike from John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut (3,962m). This part of the trek will take you through the giant lobelia and groundsel zone. You will see some of the most unique and beautiful plants in the world. The hike is challenging, but the views are worth it. You will stay overnight at Bujuku Hut.
Day 5: Bujuku to Elena Hut
On day 5, you will hike from Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut (4,540m). This part of the trek is the most challenging, as you will have to climb the steep and rocky trail called Scott Elliot Pass. However, when you reach the top, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the mountains. You will stay overnight at Elena Hut.
Day 6: Margherita Peak and Kitandara Lakes
On day 6, you will wake up early to climb Margherita Peak (5,109m), the highest peak of Ruwenzori Mountains. The climb is challenging and requires some technical skills, but your guide will be there to help you every step of the way. After reaching the summit, you will descend back to Elena Hut and continue trekking to Kitandara Lakes (4,023m). The lakes are a beautiful sight and a great place to rest after the climb. You will stay overnight at Kitandara Hut.
Day 7: Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
On day 7, you will hike from Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m). This part of the trek will take you through the fresh field pass and the Bujongolo cave. The hike is challenging but offers stunning views of the mountains. You will stay overnight at Guy Yeoman Hut.
Day 8: Guy Yeoman to Nyakalengija
On the final day of the trek, you will hike from Guy Yeoman Hut back to Nyakalengija trailhead. You will meet your driver and transfer back to your accommodation in Kasese town. This is a good time to rest and relax after the trek.
